Girls & Grizzlies

First, I just want to say thanks a merrymillion to everyone who commented, messaged, tweeted, and reached out to me after yesterday's post.  It is great to know I am not the only one who dreaded the enivitable and I know it is opening myself up for such a great future in blogging.  Now, if you really love me you will continue to excuse this cold weather almost-dusk horrible quality of pictures along with some super fuzzy ones, right?!  You know you reallllly love me, right? Xo

Here is some wild news you just may not know about me! I am a contest addict.  If I see a twitter contest, a Facebook share it to win it, or a radio station call in... you bet your sweet Aunt Sally I will do my best to win that mofo.  I guess the fact that I have racked up some pretty sweet prizes (second row Sheryl Crow, an Xbox 360, theatre tickets, etc) keeps me going at it again and again.  I didn't even remember entering a contest for sweet Memphis Grizz tickets and free dinner and drinks at a local downtown restaurant but lo and behold! I get a call telling me I won a few weeks ago and I was FLOORED!  I took my red-headed sister and we had such a good time.  We stuffed our faces with fried food and local brews.  And almost immediately regretted it, but we were soon focused on cheering our hometown boys.  Sadly, they lost, but it was such an experience to have great seats and even better company.  As you can see from the sign above, I kept my section cheering until the final buzzer!

I love dressing up a t-shirt!  I wanted to bring out a tulle skirt or two, but decided it was best in this freezing weather to keep it a bit more casual.  Yes, casual for me is normally a dress so this was perfect!  I love my new Grizz shirt I picked up in anticipation of this night, it has a soft vintage feel and I'm so happy with it.  Who says you can't be girlie and enjoy a beer and a bball game!?
I may be able to win things, but I'm completely incapable of catching t-shirts flying from a cannon...
WHAT IS WITH THAT?
(my boys, drinking one for my homies, and my grizz nails!)

Wicked & Wine

 dress: asos (similar) // necklace: eclectic ornaments // booties: barefoot tess // sunglasses: mossimo via target // clutch: ENIT design

On Saturday, my favorite theatre pal (resident BFF) and I headed out to see Wicked at The Orpheum.  We grabbed some pre-show local brews at South Of Beale then we were BLOWN AWAY by the show! I had seen Wicked before, but this was like the first time all over again!  I am a total theatre freak and I had to pinch myself to keep from singing along to every song.

Brace yourselves for one of the MOST exciting and fun restaurant concepts!  After the excitement, we were parched and in need of some major deliciousness.  We hit up Greencork, which is in Midtown Memphis in the Cooper Young area.  I cannot believe that I put off hitting this place up for so long!  Basically, you get a pre-paid, or personalized tab card, and you can choose from a ton of self-serve wines with different pour options.  Helloooooo!  I was smitten from the get-go, and then you add in a delicious meat and cheese plate and I was all set to move in forever.  If you're local, you have to go check it out (also, call me!)

SUCH a merry weekend!
Have the greatest week ever ever.

Leopard Print Scarf

 black pants: h&m // polka dot blouse: target // cardigan: old navy
 // leopard scarf: target // flats: marshalls

If you don't recognize my leopard print partner in crime up there, it is none other than little Laura of Walking In Memphis In High Heels.  She invited me to take part in styling myself for her Day to Night series.  We picked a leopard scarf (an item we both owned) to style! I LOVE leopard, that is quite a recurring theme here.  I have a more casual, daytime look and Laura with her red hot accessories is more of a nighttime ensemble.  I couldn't stay away from my new liquid lipstick, but the pop of color makes the otherwise neutral outfit feel fresh.  I know LB in real life and I love her style so much!  Check out her blog and the deets on her outfit here

The Memphis Flyer featured me in a Style Session post yesterday.  I was so thrilled when they asked me to be a part, and it was SUCH a blast!  I am even more inspired to save up for that nice camera because the pictures turned out great.  The rest of the pics and the post can be found here.

instaMerrymaking

I had a friend in town from Atlanta this weekend (Hey Alli!) and I had the best time ever showing her some new Memphis places that have popped up since she moved.  We went to great restaurants, hit up the new candy shoppe, and more importantly had amazing Bloody Marys.  Girl's weekends are THE best! And I am so sad that it is over now!  I hope all of my little chickens had the best weekend ever, and I hope you'll come back tomorrow and check out the AMAZING new giveaway I will have running!  Make the most out of this Monday! Xo.

Featured on Style Sessions

Good morning and happy Tuesday to you all! I hope you survived the muck of Monday and that you are in gear for a great week.  I actually had a fabulous Monday despite the rain and gloom we had as weather.  I had my coffee, a great day at work, and a workout (!!!)... my first in a little while.
In fact, I hadn't realized how long it had actually been until I drove to the gym and found it had relocated.
Don't worry, I found it.
Uhhh, yeah, so here's to a healthier few months and some GOOD NEWS!
Matters of Merrymaking was one of a handful of local Memphis style blogs to be featured in a Style Session blog post by the Memphis Flyer.  We were asked about our favorite upcoming trends and advice on style going in to the New Year.  I kind of sound like an ignoramus quoted in the article, but what can I say? I'm passionate about patterns.  Check the article and other FABOOSH Memphis style blogs here.  Thanks to Sophorn for the write-up and photo below.
Xo, my little chickens.
Oh, and in case you missed it, enter the Foxcroft giveaway posted yesterday...

Boots With The Fringe

 tights: we love colors // boots: jeffrey campbell (here) // dress: ross // necklace: versona accessories

Ever since I bought these boots on sale, I have been wanting to wear them every day.  Unfortunately I am a realist, and they are lovely, yet non-practical boots.  I whipped them out this weekend for Saturday lunch at a favorite college sub shop, followed by impromptu day drinking at Memphis brewery.  Makeup shopping, LOTS of margaritas, family bonding time! We had the weirdest warm front, but once I fully commit to my tights collection, there is no turning back for me.  Sunday, I got to shower a really close friend from high school with baby girls for her boy and girl TWINS she is expecting in January.  Such a fun way to spend an afternoon!
 As Monday approaches, I am truly excited for the upcoming holiday activities!
First stop, Friendsgiving!  Can't. Wait.

Weekend Wrap-Up

This was me for most of last week.  I think it was a side effect of the flu shot I got the week before, but thankfully I am feeling merry once again.

I was rockin' out by the time the weekend rolled around.
Braving the surprise of a super cold earrrrrrly Saturday morning, I went to tailgate and attend the Memphis Tigers football game.  We lost, but it was definitely FUN FUN!
Sunday, I got to meet my new nephew puppy, Copper! Isn't he the CUTEST! I love him already.
Perfect weather called for some lattes and the mall with my baby sister.
I got a new dress and a new Mac lip pencil I am way too excited about.
Hope all of you guys had super great weekends!!
Stay merry.

(Dish)Crawlin' In Memphis

FOOD FIGHT!
When it comes to food, I'm not necessarily known in my group of friends as the chick with the refined palate.  I like what I like. but I am always game to try new things!  Exploring new restaurants is fun!
When the fabulous Kim, from Dishcrawl, asked me if I wanted to be one of the judges for Battledish: Memphis (read more about that here,) I didn't hesitate.  I got to try new dishes at 6 different downtown restaurants in Memphis, FOUR of which I had never even been to before!
Also... there were cocktails... yummy, yummy, yummy cocktails.
Here we go:
I'm not one of those people to save the best for last, so I am sharing my favorite with you first.
Some people eat their dessert first, I have an affinity for mango flavored drinks.

The Restaurant:  Automatic Slim's
The Dish: 4-Sauce Pan Seared Sesame Encrusted Tuna with Spiced Rice & Wakame
The Cocktail: They had two cocktails entered.
left: Muddle Mango Mojito
right: Cranberry Lemongrass Martini
//
I had never had seared tuna before and if it tastes this good anywhere else, I am now a believer!  We all tried the different sauces, I personally loved the soy and wasabi ones.  I loved the atmosphere (check those lanterns out!) and service at Automatic Slim's.  If you are freaked out by the seaweed, that's cool, but every single part of this dish complimented one another.   Our server, Julia, was a gem and she was so awesome to our party of 5, even when we came back post-crawl and ordered MORE mojitos.  Like I said, I like what I like.
We will DEFINITELY come back here to try their brunch menu.  I can't believe I walked by this restaurant a million times and never went inside.
 TOP:
The Dish: Flammkuchen (it was like a pizza on a really thin and crunchy crust with gruyere, bacon, creme fraiche, and sage.
The Cocktail:  Also, they had two, "Million Dollar Margarita" and "Trishalicious" (pictured)
//
Goodness, gracious, great balls of Flamma-what?
Well, I was not at all familiar with the Flammkuchen dish or what it was supposed to be, but I liked the crunchy crust and the bacon!  Bad judge Bekah, google is my friend now.  I would like to try it again sometime.  The margarita wasn't much to write home about, in my opinion, but I would definitely order the Trishalicious (some mixed drink with cranberry, vodka, red bull, and apple pucker) the next time I am kicking up my heels in the honky tonk.

BOTTOM:
The Restaurant: Lunchbox Eats
The Dish: Short Rib Chili in a Buttery Cornbread Cup
The Cocktail: (no cocktail entered, but we got Coconut Lemonade and it was BAD ASS!)
//
I had read reviews of Lunchbox Eats before, but never ventured to their spot nestled behind quiet side of the Fed Ex Forum.  We sat at a huge table with shelves of childhood games at our reach, and I was a fan from the beginning.  Presentation wise, I was immediately won over by the chili being served in little cups of cornbread.  It was adorable and delicious.  I loved the unique taste, more sweet, made with cinnamon.  The short ribs were a great addition.  All five of us ate the entire dish and cornbread cup, crumbs and all.  Also, really great service here. Apparently, Memphians flock here for their grown-up version of dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets and fries.  I'm sold.

  TOP:
The Restaurant: Tamp & Tap
The Dish: Autumn Napoleon
The Cocktail: (no cocktail entered here either, but I got a beer because it is a restaurant specializing in coffee AND beer, and I seize all opportunities, folks)
//
The full description of this dish was Autumn Napoleon of Horseradish Brioche French Toast, Roasted Butternut Squash Puree, Quinoa, Heirloom Tomato Relish, Fried Shiitake and Prosciutto with Lime Chimichurri.  (SAY THAT FIVE TIMES FAST!)  The description (to a non-foodie aka ME) is very all over the place, but imagine it as a parfait of everything awesome topped with more awesome.  There you have it.  I liked the dish a lot, but it was too rich to eat the whole thing. So many flavors.

BOTTOM:
The Restaurant: Belle Diner
The Dish:  Braised Short Rib with Grit Cake and Sautéed Brussels Sprouts
The Cocktail: Bloody Belle (not pictured)
//
The Belle Diner now inhabits the former Rio Loco space where I had many a margarita fueled birthday celebration, but that's another story for another day.  I love the revamp of the space, it was fancified and well decorated!  I am lacking a picture of the Bloody Mary because I was so excited about it, I forgot to snap one.  When we got this dish, everyone at the table got QUIET!  My sister, Sarah, looked at me and exclaimed, "Now, this is FOOD!" The grit cake was crispy and creamy perfection.
Our plates (and glasses) were cleaned, and our souls were cured.

(Check out my official judging face... totally profesh, right?)
The Restaurant:  Rizzo's Diner
The Dish: Grit & Grind (Duck Confit and Goat Cheese, wrapped in Grits, rolled in Panko, and served atop Sauteed Spinach)
The Cocktail: South Mango Mimosa
//
This was the restaurant that we came to last (almost four hours in to the battle,) and even though we were full and happy, I was a little let down by Rizzo's.  I had such high hopes for this restaurant, as the other judges I ran in to had bragged about the cocktail.  Our drinks were watered down and not really impressive.  The food was really good, I loved the spicy red sauce it was served with.  Also, this was the only restaurant where the chef came around and spoke to all the patrons.  Points for service and personality.  I will make it my life's mission to try this drink again, stay tuned.

If you are still reading...
You deserve a cocktail and a gold star. All of the judge's votes were tallied
up and you can see the big time winners here.
All in all, it was such a FUN experience to explore downtown Memphis in a different way!  I had passed by those restaurants a hundred times and never gone in!  Check out Dishcrawl's website and see if they are crawling around in your area.  You will not regret it.  I will definitely be taking part in the Slider Crawl coming in November and COCKTAIL WARS in early December.

Battledish: Memphis

This weekend, all merrymaking will be amped up a notch!  I know, I didn't think that was possible either.  I was asked to be one of the judges in the Battledish Memphis competition! If you have not heard of Battledish, which is a special branch of Dishcrawl, you HAVE to check it out.  Chances are there is one right in your own city.

Six chefs have been chosen to compete in Battledish: Memphis this October in conjunction with the 60 other chefs competing in North America for King of Battledish.
I am so excited to try dishes from six local chefs, paired with delicious cocktails!
If you're in Memphis, use code 'merrymaking' for $10 off your ticket!
Come hang out and meet new people and try fancy dishes from some of the best chefs in Memphis.
Check out the chefs and menus here.
See ya there.

Perfect Pairs & Pizza Pies

dress: ASOS //  booties: barefoot tess //  necklace: dots //  purse: steve madden // shades:  calvin klein
What are your favorite things to do on the perfect weather weekends?
My go-to plan is DEFINITELY a patio!  Also, a shift dress and booties make the perfect pair!
The weather was the definition of early fall perfection on Saturday and I took full advantage!
My siblings, my mom, and I wanted to grab lunch on a patio and I knew just the place.
Downtown, Aldo's Pizza Pies has an amazing S. Main St. view of the trolley, princess horse carriages, and prime people watching.  Last time I went, it was really busy so I am glad we experienced a more laid back pizza experience.  Not to mention, they have some of the BEST local beers on draft.
my sisters and me :)

All in all, a pretty perfect fall afternoon with the fam.
Hope your weekend was merry and delicious!

Birthday Weekend!

Yes, indeed, my little chickens! The merrymaker turns 25 years of age this weekend.
Sunday, to be exact.
// Cue Dies Irae \\
Here's a quick throwback to the last monumental four birthdays of my twenties.

A quarter of a century of laughter, friends, family, and fun.  Four (legal) years of margarita consumption and over a million karaoke songs under my belt.  Sure... not all of 20's life goals have been crossed off my inner to-do list, but I have had way more fun than I deserve.  The past year had brought on a mountain-load of hard times and losses, but every day was made easier by the amazing support system I have in my life.  So, have a margarita in my honor this weekend and turn up some country music really loud... call a friend and tell them you love them. And hey, I think we can all agree that a new driver's license picture was the best birthday gift I could possibly receive.

Bachelorettes & Blind Bears

Well, I am barely recovered from the last three days!  My weekend took off early on Friday with my sister's bachelorette party (the wedding is in 12 days!!!!) and we had such a blast.
I planned the whole she-bang and I was super thrilled that it went so well!
We had a Great Gatsby theme where everyone dressed up and it was so fabulous.
The night started with a wine tasting led by one of my friends, followed by a lingerie shower, then to a fabulous restaurant in Memphis called the Majestic Grille.  Then we rented the room behind the bar at the Bind Bear, our local speakeasy, for cocktails and dancing.  If you're not familiar, it is a room with a two way mirror behind the bar so you can see everything that is going on in the bar from your own private room! SO FUN!

Cheers! I hope you had great weekends of your own, little chickens!
See you soon :)
